The Best Music You Aren’t Listening To

You are missing out on a lot of great music. Corporations like Clear Channel own huge numbers of radio stations across the US and dictate what you listen to, which is about the same playlist regardless of where you might be living in the states. MTV and Rolling Stone aren’t much help either in finding good music.

What I’ve found are amazing websites that help me find new music. One site offers new mp3’s at a great price and without feeling badly about buying them. No buyers remorse, no “stealing.” Kazaa, Limewire and other peer-to-peer networks makes conscientious music lovers feel guilty about “stealing” music and using those networks does not guarantee that you will get what you are looking for either. At Allofmp3.com, buyers can find new artists at prices around $.04 a song. Cheap. Really cheap. If you decided to buy the album outright, you can get it for as little as $12 at BestBuy or $18 at the mall, too much. At the iTunes Store, you’re paying about $.99 a song…still seems too much. Using the iTunes route you could end up paying more for an album than if you bought the album at BestBuy

Taking advantage of Allofmp3.com’s cheap prices and easy interface with MusicMobs.com and MusicPlasma.com will allow you to find great music without spending a lot of cash. What? Good music that’s cheap? Who ever heard of that?

MusicMobs.com lets users upload an .xml file from an iTunes or WinAmp music player. (The .xml file is basically a dataset that says how many times you played a song, what you’ve rated it (from 1 – 5) and all the basic information of the song, such as the artist, song name, album, etc.) It’s pretty easy to upload an .xml file onto the MusicMobs.com site. In your iTunes, go to the File Menu, select Export Library and Save it somewhere you will be able to find it. Once you have a MusicMobs.com account there will be an option to Upload XML on your user page. Easy stuff.

The MusicMobs.com site stores all of this information in a personal profile. It also allows you to see what other people are listening to, and the site recommends music you might like based on your profile and ranks songs and artists according to how many people are listening to the songs and how they ranked the songs.

MusicPlasma.com is another great site for finding artists similar to what you like. For example, if you type in “Josh Groban”, you’ll get a list of artists that are similar (i.e., Lorin Maazel, Russel Watson, Alessandro Safina, Norah Jones and a host of others). So, who are most of these folks? Is their music any good? The best way to find out is to go to MusicMobs, type in the name of the artist and get a list of their best songs. What to do from here? Go to Allofmp3.com and buy the song(s) for $.04 each, a good deal and ridiculously cheap as far as new music goes. Then, you can mix and burn and your own CDs or upload to your iPod.

Why is all this good? It will turn you into a proactive listener, you will be more in tune with the music that is out there and you will become an intelligent music listener. Listen to the radio: In every city across the nation, the same songs play on almost every station. Aren’t we a diverse group of people? Don’t you consider your hometown culture unique? Minneapolis is different from Cleveland and Washington D.C. differs from Detroit. So, why should we all listen to the same music? We shouldn’t and we won’t, if we change our habits.

You don’t have to buy $18 CDs with only a few good songs anymore. You don’t have to listen to radio stations owned by Clear Channel and you don’t have to listen to the same music as everybody else. Music is a huge part of our culture, and we should control what we hear, not big media.

What’s the next step after visiting these sites? Get a CD burner; learn to use it. Get an mp3 player; learn to use it. Change your music habits. You’ll be happier.
